THE REAL SLIM SHADY- EMINEM       22/07/15

Unlike the other music videos I have researched, this music video shows Eminem performing which is a key element to his videos, but he is also surrounded by actors, therefore making it narrative however very much less illustrative and abstract. this is because rap stars are known to be very talented and are supposed to represented as 'Real' so perfomance videos are key to keeping this representation. Mathers himself, and the actors are showing no contradiction in the lyrics for example, "will the real slim shady please stand up... okay were going to have a problem here" Is accompanied by slim shady, and a group of shady mimics standing up when called, making the film both comical and entertaining and understandable/clear. This video attracts the target audience of again, young adults, perhaps whom have had a similarly rough upbringing, as he makes the best of situations and is showing he can still enjoy himself and joke around, contradictingly to most, this video also acts as a deterrant to other audiences that do not listen to his music, such as older men and women, by making the video rather graphic and rude, which shocks the older audience yet entertain others. This promotes eminem as people are going to talk about it and a hype will be created because of the video  therfore promoting him as an artist and promoting his music.

The camerawork used in this video has been specifically selected for effect. For example at the very start we are shown a two shot of two nurses who appear to be badly sorting out medication. This implies that as a pair they have important roles in the video. This is followed by a mid shot of several men that seem to be mentally impaired including eminem himself and once they are asked 'can the real slim shady please stand up?' eminem is the only one that doesnt stand up. This makes him the main focus which is why he then begins to rap himself.  At 0:20 into the video we are shown a high angle shot of pamela anderson reading a magazine. This represents her as a sterotypical women who likes to read magazines. Furthermore the effect of a high angle shot makes the female look weak and inferior.  At 0:30 we are shown a clip of eminem and two of his friends which uses a low angle shot to show superiority. From 2:16- 2:18 the camera zooms out to show us eminem standing at the end of a room full of actors dressed and looking like him which amplifies the lyrics when the sentence 'all you other slim shadys are just imitating' is sung. By the time the video reaches 3:18 we are shown an ariel shot of eminem doing doghnuts in his car which represents him to the audience as reckless and into high speed which is stereotypical of hip hop stars.

The way the video is editied also has an effect on the audience. Continuity editing has been consistent throughout the video as the 180 degree rule has been put in place and also the eye-line match shots when the nurses are asking the real slim shady to stand up and we are then shown the group of patients she is addressing. Fast motion is used at 0:24 when pamela anderson is being chased by an angry boyfriend. The effect this has on the video is that it adds a comedic effect as it seems to be adding unnecessary drama, as a result this appears to be taking the mick out of pamela which is funny to the majority of the target audience that are male as it is degrading to women. Fast paced editing is also used to match the pace of the song itself which involves fast paced rapping.  The style of cuts used are all straight cuts to add to the overall sense of realism that the video not only presents but attempts to make comedic.
