     BREEZEBLOCKS- ALT J           15/07/15

Alt-J formed in 2007 as a British indie rock band. the main concept of this video is a domestic fight, with the male trying to keep the woman in his apartment, there is no footage of the band performing, nor is there any lip-syncing, this is to represent the band as being artistic, and to amplify the lyrics and is known as illustrative according to Goodwins theory. The first line of the song reads "But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks" This is mirrored by the establishing shot being a girl in a bath full of water form the very start of the video, being held under by breezeblocks, this then folds out into a fight in reverse (0:35), showing more detailed meanings behind the lyrics and therfore the video becomes amplified. This appeals to a niche audience and gives them chance to relate to the lyrics and in reuslt they will be able to relate to the band iself as people with problems like everyone else. Also it is quite an alternative video, showing grapic fights, this would promote the artist as "edgey" as they are taking a risky aproach, a video of this genre would create word of mouth, therefore promoting them and their music. There is a wide range of camera shots used that have created effect. For example there is a close up at 0:07 of a man with his hhead in his hands which instantly tells the audience that the video has a sad storyline which refelcts the context of the lyrics. AT 0:40 we are shown a mid shot of a gril trying to get away form a man but is being held onto. This allows the veiwers to see there is a struggle/fight happening and we can also see the strained expression on her face which emphasis this. We are then shown a extreme close up of the the props and the two characters hands squezzed together in a tight grip showing us that they are being highly aggressive to eachother evnethough it seems that they are married as he is wearing a wedding ring.

Mise-en-scene is also used for effect in this video. For example at the very start of the video we are shown that the girl is being held down by  a breezeblock which links back to the lyrics when it says "But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks". One of the props used is a knife which connotes violence and murder which intriues the audience as we wonder why the man and women are so aggressively fighting. From the use of the knife it represents the band as people that have been through traumatic events and are tryin to get that message through the lyrics of the son and the events in the video. This is emphasised by The use of gafatape instantly tells the audience that the female is a victim/hostage which adds a layer of meaning to the story and too the lyrics of the song itself. The setting in which the video takes place is in what seems to be an apartment. This makes it relatable to the target audience as a mass audience live in apartments. the costumes worn in the video are causal clothing which emphasises the relatability of the characters as they are represented as ordinary people. Furthermore the colours of the clothing that the man and women fightin are wearing are dark colours to represent them as rthe antagonists in the video as the audience connot dark colours with evil and agression. However the women that appears to be the victim that we see at 2:49 is wearing a light grey/biege cardigan that represents her as the innocent one but also sad and lonely through the dullness of the colours. At 3:25 were shown a scene wear the man gafatapes a womens mouth up. low key lighting is used to create a cynical atmosphere in this video. Shadows are used to make the characters appear intimidating to the audience.

There is not a huge variety of editing done on this video however the whole video is edited to appear in reverse which confuses the audience and sistorts the story which therefore excites the audience as they have to infer for themselves why certain events are happening and what led to them. Alongside the reverse editing, slow motion is used which allows the audience to see more detail within the scenes we are shown. The use of slow motion also intensifies the events as everything they do is amplified and exaggerated as the veiwers have time to guess what could happen which builds tension.
