BALKAN BEAST- GYPSY HILL

26/10/15

Throughout this music video we see the band playing there track in two different locations, a studio and a gig. Both are very basic locations and the use of the two shows the audience the effort they put in practicing to perform, the emphasis on the skill of the musician is a convention that becomes apparent in many hip-hop videos and allows the audience to hold the artists on a pedastal due to their music skill. The characters throughout are all musicians and audiences, the two used together connotes the strong connection between the product and the buyer (uses and gratifications theory- personal relationship). Similarly to Dizraeli's 'never mind' video there is a mixture of men and women characters allowing there to be a large target audience and is not just male dominated and more people can relate to the video (uses and gratifications theory-personal identity). The costumes are all baggy casual clothing, much like the “never mind” video cannoting that the music is there life rather than an act. It also represents the laid back appearance of the hip-hop culture. The lighting throughout is just normal room lights, again connoting the realness, it is not a huge put on production, this also helps with the black and white effect as it shows bright highlights and dark shadows in natural places.

Moving to camera work, all the shots throughout are either close-ups or mid shots of the artists performing. These two shots help the audience focus on the musicians and the skills they have, emphasising the talent rather than the exterior, a common convention in hip-hop videos. There is also a range of focus changes throughout when presenting instruments and mixers revealing there size and intricacy, again emphasising the skill needed to use them. This is showing a lot of the production side to the audience, again connoting the strong connection between artist and audience aloowing the veiwers to again build a relationship with the artists (uses and gratification theory).

Sound is used to show the enjoyment the artists are getting out of playing, there are not many lyrics in this track so it is mainly instrumental, the use of shots of instruments and artists mirrors this well. The only lyrics used are “Balkan beast” a beast being something immense, this is portraying the size of the band, consisting of many artists, they are showing the madness created when they mix the two genres of music.

Editing is used to strip down this video rather than build it up. They have used a black and white filter, this shows the exterior simplicity, emphasising the reality of this band, but this is then contrasted by the short shots and jump cuts used. The mix of the two is showing how intricate the production of their music is, but also how real they are, the complete opposite to pop, where there is a lot of post-production to change the artists into something better than they are.
