BORN THIS WAY- LADY GAGA 13/07/15
This video demonstrates the usual traits that are associated with Lady Gaga’s videos such as symbolism and her videos are commonly abstract/concept videos (typoloy of Goodwin's theory). It also has a clear narrative along with the lyrics of the song itself for example the idea of birth matches the lyrics . According to Goodwin's theory this also means that the video is amplified as new layers of meaning is added to the idea of birth in the lyrics and song. alot of performance has a large role in the video within the dance routines that Lady Gaga takes part in herself.
Right from the begining of the video she begins to tell a story that reflects the story she tells withing the lyrics of the song. the actuall song doen't begin till 2:35 intio the video. This builds up the supsense as the audience is waiting to hear the song itself. Alot of editing is used in this video for effect. For example when she is telling the story of a new race that has been born there is multiple ways in which the computer has been used to edit the video. Such as there is intense graphics used at the start of the story which makes it hard to realise what is happening but we can infer from the way it is shot that Lady Gaga is giving birth. At 0;12 we are shown an image of lady gaga floating in what seems to be the sky/ space whiich we know cannot be done without photoshop. Editing is also used to distort the image as shown at 2:03 which makes the audience wonder what is going on and what props are being used and what relevance they have. The use of distortion also refelcts the message of the lyrics as they tell us that the worlds veiw on how pople should act/wear is distorted and needs to be challenged. A black and white filter is used at 2:05 which creates an eerie atmosphere and connotes darkness and sadness which is representative of the character she is then playing (evil). The editing then changes slightly so there is slightly more colour shown but it is still dull and low key lighting is used thorughout the video to create a dark atmosphere. The use of low key lighting also makes us focus on Lady Gaga and her performers as they are all we can see and the background is black. the dance routine begins at 3 minutes into the video and shows unity between Lady Gaga and what seems to be her 'children'. Straight cuts are used to transfer from scene to scene which makes it simple and doesnt detract the attention away form lady gaga and the events happening around her. when the dance routine begins at 3:00 the pace of the cuts increases and makes the video more exciting for the audience and links to the pace of the song when the chorus starts as the pace of the editing then increases again.
Towards the end of the video she is shown as a silhouette intimidating the dance sequence from Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, which again according to Goodwin’s theory is an intertextual reference. Perhaps she has included this scene as she is paying respect to Michael Jackson and Madonna who have been titled the King and Queen of pop by the media. she has also used a camera shot that madonna is famous for:
A reason she has chosen to be represented as 'Madonna-like' is maybe because Madonna has been named the Queen of pop in the media. This close up is one of many that is in this video, following Andrew Goodwin’s theory that record labels demand plenty of close ups so there is the most focus on her as a star.
